i just got into him after years of resisting his talent (i mainly reisisted because people i didn't particularly like in my own life were big fans of his so lets be honest and say he was guilty by association...
but 'high fidelty' is such a brilliant piece of writing. he writes better of death and self-rightousness and the petty thoughts of the average bloke than anything i have ever read.
Completely agree, "High Fidelity" is a great read.
Being the music fan that you are, I'd also recommend "Songbook." It's short, but it's him running down his favorite 33 or 34 songs, why he likes them, and basically why people like the music they do. It's pretty cool, and I hadn't heard 2/3 of the songs he writes about at the time.

thats on my list to read soon... i was also completely impressed with "fever pitch". i resisted reading it because of the awfulness that was the movie but the book is brilliant- even causing me to shift my allegience somewhat from manchester united and/or liverpool over to arsenal...
I think it's been long enough with liking Liverpool to safely say I'm a Liverpool supporter, but Arsenal's red kit with the white sleeves is the best looking in the Premiership.
And thus, another thread about art and literature has been spun back into a discussion of sports and jerseys. I'm so proud of us.

i ordered my son a machester united away kit with rooney's name and number on the back... it came with shorts and socks and i can't wait 'til he will fit in it properly...
but hornby reminded me of listening to a great record for the 1st time... i remember hearing "no code" or "blone on blonde" for the 1st times and its like being pounded with wave after wave after wave of mind-bending brilliance...
his pages and chapters read like going from "sometimes" right into "hail, hail" and then somberly back into "who you are"/"in my tree"...
this might be the weirdest sentence i have ever written but: my wife even commented that i "looked different" when i was reading "high fidelity" or "fever pitch", like i was in a trance or something...
either way, i'm still rooting for england in the world cup- fully aware they are in the same bracket as the good ol' usa...

The American baseball one or the British one with that guy...you know, that guy. Who's in all those British movies? Yeah, him. I haven't seen either, but i've heard decent things about the British one.
Also, High Fidelity might be my favourite book/movie. He has probably the most richly developed characters going right now. I haven't been as impressed by anything else i've read by him (I like the movie version of About a Boy more, and A Long Way Down was just boring), but he's still one of my favourite authors going. Has anyone read Juliet, Naked yet? It's kind of a spiritual sequel to High Fidelity - pretty good
