So I picked this up today, all giddy.  It's not a bad album at all, it's just... what's the word?  Unremarkable?  I'm interested to see what your opinion on this is, Nick.  There are quite a few good songs on there, but I'm not quite sure what to make of it yet.

It's definately not as catchy as their 1st. I agree with you, unremarkable. I'd still be pumped to catch one of their shows. It might get better over time, we'll see...

Yeah, sometimes I've just been OK with an album, seen the band on the tour, and then I love that same album.

That's happened to me a few times. Sonic Youth and Rather Ripped, Kings of Leon and Aha Shake Heartbreak and Nine Inch Nails' With Teeth come to mind.
