Just thought of a new title for the What You've Been Listening to threads we've had in the past.
Considering my recent shows (Michael Franti & Spearhead, Pearl Jam, Black Keys), that's mostly what I've been listening to.
On the Franti end, been hanging out on his website and listening to "Sound of Sunshine" and "Shake It"...sorta cheesy but I am loving it anyway.
On the Pearl Jam end, I've been keeping busy with the Philly boxed set, and going back to Backspacer a bit since the MSG shows really gave me a greater appreciation of the album.
Black Keys - the review is up, so y'all know what I'm listening to there.
Otherwise, started listening some more to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, which is my 2010 music revelation. First Motown sounding band in a very long time that doesn't sound like a cheap reincarnation...they are the real deal. And Sharon Jones' voice is second to none.
i just went on a i-tunes splurge (i swear i have become so lame that i fel guitly about spending like $18 bucks at i-tunes)
but i bought a few neil young jams (live from massey hall), some simon & garfunkle from central park, some jackson browne, and some roling stones stuff... i really have been crazy nostalgic lately and really diggin' classic rock.
the neil youg thingis funny because he asks that people go easy on picture taking during the songs and only take them when 'everyone is clapping at the end of the song' and this was 1971...
I would say "don't feel guilty", but I sorta understand where you are coming from there. With a wedding coming, moving in a month and a half, vacation in Maine, etc., etc...I feel bad whenever I blow a few bucks, including on copies of the Pearl Jam shows I attended (I've never felt bad about that before).
In the meantime, that Massey Hall show is excellent, and I am usually not that nuts for Neil Young solo (I like it, but personally I prefer him with Crazy Horse, or if we're real lucky one day, the mighty Pearl Jam once again), so that says a lot about that show.
The Black Crowes - Before The Frost ... Until the Freeze The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf Grateful Dead - Ladies and Gentlemen... Fillmore East 1971 The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
At this second, though, it's the Grateful Dead. I feel my first serious Dead kick in a couple of years coming on.

Yeah, I get those kicks every couple of years. I saw a really fun exhibit here at the New York Historical Society a few months ago about the Grateful Dead. It went into not just the music, but the fanbase and their business model through the years. Really fascinating stuff.
Oh, and I've been listening to the Philly 4 Pearl Jam show on my ipod. Once that is done, the plan is to hear the new Tom Petty, Dead Weather, and then the 2 MSG shows from last month. Exciting times.
I listened to the Flaming Lips - Embryonic all night last night. I know it's not that old, but I'd sort of already forgotten how mind-blowingly awesome that album is.
Tom Petty album is quite awesome. In some ways, he's finishing what he started with his solo Highway Companion, and in other ways, they blow it away (I'm talking to you, Mike Campbell!)
My question to the world after this is...how does a rock star who's been around in the mainstream for about 35 years come out with something this good? I would say easily best album since Tom Petty's Wildflowers, and after a few more listens, could end up on the same level. Just an awesome, rockin', bluesy sounding album.
