Wild World of New York Sports

We haven't talked sports in a while!

Okay, so things are relatively predictable in that Boston neck of the woods - the Celtics are dominating the Eastern Conference, the Red Sox are considering smaller moves to upgrade their team while waiting for a big splash to come along (or at least Gonzalez), the Patriots are tied for first in the AFC East, etc., etc.

But in my neck of the woods, all heck seems to have broken loose!  The Yankees got blasted in the ALCS, which would normally lead to a ginormous spending spree, but instead resulted in the brass flatly telling its "Core Four" (not a big fan of that term) that they are old.  Jeter is mired in messy contract negotiations and the fans are siding with the team over the player, which comes at a bit of a surprise.  No one is even talking about  the fact that the automatic team MVP for the last 15 years (Mariano Rivera) isn't signed...and things promise to get worse on both fronts if Jeter and Rivera are not signed before the Yankees unload a dump truck of cash on Cliff Lee's front yard.

In football, the Giants (my team) are holding on by a thread week to week, while on the other end of the equation, the Jets are so full of themselves, I find myself rooting for a Boston sports team this week over the New York team.

Which brings me to the most shocking development of all - the KNICKS are a winning team!  At 10-9, they are over .500 at the latest point in the season for them since...get ready for this...2004!  In 6 years, they have been so sorry that they've not broken past .500 this late, and we are not even a quarter of the way through the season.  While they are certainly destined to a sub .500 fate.  If they do what they have been doing (beating the teams that have less talent while losing to the teams with more talent), they have a more than decent chance of a playoff series this year.  Wow!  As a very loyal Knicks fan going back enough years to demand disappointment annually, this is very difficult to wrap my brain around.  Knicks teams underachieve, even with tremendous talent bases (the exception was the 1999 season as they were without their top star and still managed to fight their way to the NBA Finals).

Strange days indeed.

BTW, congrats to you Boston fans on nabbing Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. Big time additions! Even if the Yankees get Cliff Lee, I would say that the Red Sox have to be the favorites in the AL East going into the season.
