Just curious what the reactions are here. Personally, I could never quite fully get into them despite enjoying at least a few songs here and there. Much preferred White's other projects over the past few years (Raconteurs and Dead Weather).
Jack White's mad-scientist-level genius was always at its highest with the White Stripes. He was completely unfiltered, and that was a beautiful thing.
Probably the best band of the 2000s, and certainly my favorite. I'll miss them.

Certainly, I have tons of respect for them over the years, even if it wasn't always my cup of tea (most of the songs you mentioned in your article I enjoyed).
The best news is even though they won't be making records, you can be sure that there'll be more Dead Weather, whom I have really enjoyed.
Also, I read something somewhere that there were some releases in the pipeline anyway from White Stripes...like b-sides and maybe a live album or something.
Yeah, Third Man Records has been doing a lot with their "Vault" releases, random singles here and there, and late last year they re-released the first three White Stripes albums on vinyl. They called that "from the vault," and now it looks like it was sort of a test run.
I think you're going to see a Grateful Dead-type approach from here, random live shows from their decade together (they recorded everything), maybe an Odds & Sods type album, that kind of thing. I have a three-CD collection in my iTunes of all their B-sides; it's not like they slacked off in the studio.

1. The White Stripes (love 'em) 2. The Raconteurs (like 'em) 3. The Dead Weather (don't really dig 'em)
Something about The Dead Weather just rubs me the wrong way, I'm not sure what it is...I like Alison Mosshart's work with The Kills, but the sounds she and Jack create just aren't pleasing to my ears.
They made a great video for Treat Me Like Your Mother though.
