As many know (Rachel), I've been listening to a lot of early R.E.M. for the past month or so, and usually in my headphones for everyone's sanity.
But I found a few early gems, and my favorites are these two: "Radio Free Europe" and "So. Central Rain," from their first TV appearance in 1983, on David Letterman. "So. Central Rain," interestingly enough, was so new that it didn't have a name yet at the time of the performance.
Also interesting, is the resemblance a young Michael Stipe bears on this future young singer, who I'm quite fond of, and who emerged on the scene about a decade later.
And now we have a YouTube thread! Post away, folks!

Well that is truly outrageous. Truly truly truly outrageous. Ohhh, Jem.
I actually used to watch that, because it came on in the afternoon in between Heathcliff and Transformers. But I never had any idea what was going on. I vaguely remember an anit-drug episode with one of the girls stealing $30 from someone's purse, though.
... Wow, where was that hiding in my brain?
