if you ever need proof of the beatles influence now, 40 years later, that song is it. my reaction when i first heard it was " that sounds like every group ive ever heard come out this decade.
"Helter Skelter" is my default "Proof that the Beatles could do anything" song. I mean, jesus, that predates Zeppelin, the classic Jeff Beck group, Sabbath, etc.
Also, Matt, you may or may not know, but the version on the White Album is edited down from the original take -- which was about 30 minutes long. That's why you hear the fade in/out/in/out, followed by Ringo's scream. I don't know if it's ever surfaced, but I would kill a man to be able to hear the original version of that in all its elongated glory.
I imagine you're at least 2 or 3 weeks away from Abbey Road. Wes, should we make him listen to Let It Be first, though? It came out as their last album, but it was recorded before Abbey Road. I haven't decided yet.

but let it be....i used to say that was my favorite, but recently i figured out that abbey road was always my favorite, i just put it in the "untouchable perfection" category, so i never really put it up against the others.
but i say let him at let it be. but dont forget the film too....both proof that the beatles, can pull off the "blue eyed bluesman" thing just as well as their other british counter parts.
