I've been on a big Dylan kick recently in anticipation of The Witmark Demos, and having taken advantage of a recent sale I'm now only missing one studio album (Under the Red Sky).
As a huge Dylan fan, I hang my head in shame that I'd been put off buying Street Legal by a few unfavourable reviews. It's absolutely superb. Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Heat) stands along side the best songs he's ever written. It's slaying me at the moment. I love the production of the album, which from the numerous complaints I've read is pretty much the last thing I should be thinking. I got the remastered version, which is apparently a noticeable improvement, but I can't see how this album was any less than great it its original form.
I also bought Knocked Out Loaded and Saved. I really should have known it was worth deep mining his critically maligned records for gold, as Shot of Love indicated when I bought the last lot (The Groom's Still Waiting At The Alter and Every Grain of Sand are highlights there). Brownsville Girl is superb. Saved gets off to a rocky start with a tame (I'm being polite here) cover of Satisfied Mind, but the vocal performance throughout might be close to a career highlight.
Anyone given Bob much time recently? Found any gems on his more modest albums?
