David Gilmour live

Aloha,

I just got back from a movie theater in lovely Taunton, Mass., which was showing David Gilmour's concert from the Mermaid Theatre in London, taped in March.

Now, if there's anyone who likes Pink Floyd even a little, or if you love Gilmour's new solo album (present), this is a must-see. Gilmour's voice is as close to perfect as possible, his guitar playing is as great as ever.

Anywho, this is the first time I've done the music-at-the-movies thing, and I was pretty impressed. A little under an hour and a half, and the sound and picture were great.

So, are there any more Floyd/Gilmour fanatics out there? Have you seen this? Are you one of those weirdos who thinks Roger Waters is better?

... "Is there anybody out there?"

Just nod if you can hear me

Hey, I'm one of those guys who got introduced to Pink Floyd at a young age, like, the fifth grade. My prior musical expertise was Fuckin' Raffi and Disney Afternoon cartoon theme songs. "I Get Around" was THE ONLY cool song I could sing, and only because I saw it in a recurring commercial. I remember listening to The Wall all the way through and thinking there were only a couple good tracks on it. "Sheep" was the only interesting song off of Animals, and "Eclipse" was the best song on Dark Side Of The Moon.

What a Fucked-up little man I was! I shouldn't have started with Pink Floyd, anyway. For the longest time, I could never hear music in lesser, more primitive forms of musical life. One afternoon in '02, roommate pumped out OAR and Elliot Smith while I tried to decode Music For Airports in my headphones (intellectually, I mean. 99% of Eno gets old quick to me).
I hear very little musicality in mainstream country music and "adult" rock and most forms of rap. Also, everyone in the South loves James Taylor, he's such a sweetie, but come on, the guy can't play guitar for sh!t.

Not that, you know, there's any possibility that I could be wrong (Announcement: Elliot Smith is a whiner!) or anything...

But it's probably better to start your li'l rockers off with (duh) Revolver or The Monkees or (Lord willing) Louis Prima and then move on semi-chronologically. I think every child in America should be handed a gift-wrapped Woodstock documentary DVD the day he/she turns 14. The legislators will bitch, of course, but I'll compromise at 15.

Pink Floyd's London gig last year broadband-streamed my arse off. What was it, Live Eight, right? I've always heard their live shows are unparalelled, but never really took a good interest in seeing one. "Dinosaur rock" and all that. Gilmour's still got it. Waters looked like he's coming down with crazy-old-man's disease. But did they have to turn down a $50 mil US tour?

RE: David Gilmour live

Actually, I think they turned down $250 million...

I got into the Beatles first, namely the Hey Jude LP, which was sort of a mish-mash of non album singles ("Hey Jude," "Paperback writer," "Revolution," etc.). The Beatles took me from the ages of 5 through about 12.

THEN, it was on to Hootie and the Blowfish, Green Day and Oasis. I still like some Oasis (emphasis on "some"), and afterwards, when I was about 13 or so, my life-long love affair with Pearl Jam began.

But it was in high school, during the reign of Matchbox 20/Third Eye Blind/Vertical Horizon that I wanted to find out what else I'd missed. Within a month I purchased Led Zeppelin's ZOSO, The Very Best of the Who, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I was hooked to all three.

Nowadays, I'm still rabid for all three, but Zeppelin on a lesser scale. Floyd, too, sent my ass to the curb at their Live 8 show (I have the video for all time on my iPod now, too), and seeing this last night was excellent. Like the best moments of the Pulse album.

By the way... did you know that the Pulse DVD is finally coming out in November? Only a mere 12 years after the album! Score!
